Okay, lets get real. I love spending time with my kids but I am officially running out of ideas to keep them entertained throughout the day. I realized that what I really needed was to keep them busy for an hour or two so that I could get some chores and work done so that I actually did something with my day. I started thinking about what sensory activities I could get them to do that were safe, fun, and stimulated their creative minds. I have of course resorted to the internet to help me out… Here are the activities that I found that the kids actually enjoyed and help me get some time to myself!
Colored Rice
Rice is a great and cheap way to create a sensory activity for your kids. You can put different colors into bins and give the kids their toys to let their imaginations fly. To make the colored rice:
- Add one cup of white rice in a bowl.
- Add a teaspoon of vinegar.
- Add food coloring.
- Spread onto a baking sheet to let dry completely.
- Add rice to bins and add toys!
Kinetic Sand
Although we cant make Kinetic Sand, we can order it online! This isn’t regular sand, it’s a crazy sensory experience! Build castles and use molds, but don’t fear when it’s nocked down, that’s where the magic begins. CLICK HERE to shop for Kinetic Sand.
Orbeez Balls
Let the kids play with these absorbent jelly balls! Purchase them, soak them, add them to bins, and let the kids take over. These colorful balls make this sensory activity feel like a make believe ocean!
Sand Box
Another easy tip is sand! Order some sand online, dump it in a play pin or an empty blow up pool, and let the kids dive in. It’s easy to make this activity fun with some sand toys and even water. This is not only fun but will make you and your kids feel like it’s a beach day!
Water, Soap, Toys!
Another sensory activity that is cheap, easy, and fun is good old water and soap. Add some room temp water and soap to a bowl or bucket, give the kids some water safe toys, and maybe even turn on a sprinkler! We all know water is an easy way to turn the day around and with the safety of parents, can be the best way for sensory fun!
