Simple Steps to Healthier Hair

As we age our hair density and quality diminishes over time. External environmental factors such as UV sun damage, chemical processing, and mechanical stress contribute to compromised hair follicle health; as can intrinsic factors such as diet, stress, and hormonal shifts.

Considering this phenomenon is a multifactorial issue, our approach in treating it also needs to identify both root causes and secondary factors in order to see a noticeable improvement.

Thankfully we have many tools to utilize in building a better hair health foundation to optimize your potential for lush locks.

Eliminate chemical & mechanical stressors

Pony tail holders and hair accessories that are pulled tightly can actually rip the bulb of the hair right out of the follicle, as can brushing hair too rigorously.  Take care with these and handle the hair gently as though not to place too much stress on the attachment point.

Try to extend the amount of time between coloring and processing appointments.

You can utilize a root spray to conceal new growth; Rita Hazan root spray is awesome, it covers well and stays on for about 2 days.

Eat a balanced diet

Ensure you are consuming an appropriate balance of protein as well as foods rich in vitamin C, Iron, B complex vitamins, additionally adding flax seed and nuts such as walnuts and almonds provide the building blocks your body needs to maximize the growth cycle. Nutrafol women’s or men’s blend provides an excellent supplement that is well tolerated by most.  Consult a professional if you need help, follow Julie Heffner @NourishNutrition for great balanced advice.

Exercise

Exercise increases your blood perfusion and causes vasodilatation. This is incredibly important for the small arterioles in the vascular bed that provides the highway of nutrition and oxygen that is essential for the delicate follicles.  Meditation would also be put into this category as it, like exercise, decreases the surges of the stress hormones that can lead to thinning hair.

OTC

There are numerous over the counter remedies and countless infomercials promising results in a bottle or device.  I always tell my patients, don’t buy hope in a bottle, save your beauty dollars for things that will reliably work.  Some that do:

Medical interventions

There are a number of more complex medical conditions that result in underlying issues, outside of the more straightforward ones related to stress, post-pregnancy, or genetics, so always consult your medical provider to adequately assess this.

Some things we can do to enhance hair quality and stimulate growth are:

Trust the professionals

Have a licensed hair stylist process your hair, the OTC formulas are harsher and there is nothing like the pick me up a great fresh style will give you.

Thankfully we live in a time where we have so many options to assist in the health and maintenance of our crowning glory. As always, feel free to DM any specific question and my team can assist you in helping you find products and great resources close to you.  @J_Derme
